TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA

A TREATMENT FOR COMPLEX TRAUMA AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga is a method of yoga developed, researched and found to be of great healing and benefit to survivors of complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated, adjunctive clinical treatment for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD. Developed at the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, Trauma Sensitive Yoga has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, Neuroscience and Hatha Yoga practice with an emphasis on mindful body-based yoga forms and breathing practices.

The body is being acknowledged more and more as a pathway to healing trauma. Founder and Medical Director of the Trauma Center, Dr Bessel van der Kolk in conjunction with David Emerson, Director of Yoga Services at The Trauma Center of Justice Resource Institute (JRI), is an internationally recognized leader in the field of psychological trauma. Researchers such as Dr Bessel van der Kolk and David Emerson have illuminated the somatic impact of trauma and clinical trials have provided the evidence base to demonstrate the efficacy of Trauma Sensitive Yoga in reducing the symptoms of complex trauma and PTSD.

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga help survivors of complex trauma and post-traumatic stress gently reconnect with their bodies in a safe, supportive environment by

  • learn to be present
  • practice making choices
  • experiencing taking effective action
  • sensing your environment
  • increasing and decreasing the intensity of muscles
  • connecting with the body and the surroundings through breath

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga can be offered in individual sessions or in small groups with sessions lasting from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. Trauma-Sensitive Yoga information session’ is also offered in workplaces. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

As such Trauma-Sensitive Yoga facilitators are officially Certified by the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at Justice Resource Institute (JRI).
